H Κρήτη και η Κνωσός έρχεται στο Broadway με την Ελεάννα Φινοκαλιώτη και τον Philip Vlahakis στο «Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical», που ανεβαίνει αυτόν τον Μαΐο στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Το νέο Off-Broadway μιούζικαλ «Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical, που ανεβαίνει από τις 14 έως τις 17 Μαΐου 2026 στο γνωστό θέατρο Asylum NYC, διαδραματίζεται στην περιοχή της Κνωσού της Κρήτης. Το κείμενο και η μουσική είναι του κρητικής καταγωγής Philip Vlahakis, ενώ στον ρόλο της Sophia πρωταγωνιστεί η Μεραμπελιώτισσα Ελεάννα Φινοκαλιώτη.
Ο Πρόεδρος του Παγκοσμίου Συμβουλίου Κρητών και Εκτελεστικός Αντιπρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής, κ. Νίκος Καστρινάκης, είχε την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσει τις πρόβες και δήλωσε τα εξής: «Είναι πολύ συγκινητικό να βλέπει κανείς ένα υψηλής ποιότητας Off-Broadway μιούζικαλ, στο πολιτιστικό κέντρο του κόσμου, να διαδραματίζεται στην περιοχή της Κνωσού. Η Ελεάννα Φινοκαλιώτη, από το Μεραμπέλλο, με την εξαίσια φωνή της και τις εντυπωσιακές υποκριτικές της ικανότητες, προκαλεί βαθιά συναισθήματα στον θεατή. Για μένα, πρόκειται για μια σύγχρονη μεταφορά στη σκηνή της ψυχής της Κρήτης. Στην Παγκρητική Ένωση Αμερικής έχουμε κάθε λόγο να είμαστε υπερήφανοι, καθώς η Ελεάννα είναι άξια απόγονος του αείμνηστου Προέδρου της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής, Κωνσταντίνου Φινόκαλου. Επιπλέον, όπως μου εκμυστηρεύτηκε ο Philip Vlahakis, η συγγραφή των κειμένων πραγματοποιήθηκε στις Αρχάνες της Κρήτης.»
Το έργο, σε κείμενο και μουσική του Philip Vlahakis, ακολουθεί τον Johnny Diskakis, έναν πρώην αθλητή που επιστρέφει με τον πατέρα του στην Κρήτη και προσπαθεί να ξαναβρεί τον δρόμο του μέσα από μια νέα, απρόσμενη εμπειρία.
Στο επίκεντρο της ιστορίας, η Sophia που υποδύεται η Φινοκαλιώτη έχει καθοριστικό ρόλο. Μέσα από τη σχέση της με τον Yiorgos, τον πατέρα του Johnny, προσπαθεί να τον οδηγήσει σε μια διαφορετική στάση ζωής και να τον φέρει αντιμέτωπο με τον εαυτό του. Ο ρόλος περιλαμβάνει και έντονο μουσικό στοιχείο, με δύο solo τραγούδια και σημαντική παρουσία σε κομβικές σκηνές.
Τη σκηνοθεσία και χορογραφία υπογράφει η Liz Piccoli, ενώ τη μουσική διεύθυνση έχει ο Julian Blackmore. Η παράσταση κινείται ανάμεσα στο χιούμορ και το συναίσθημα, με βασικά θέματα τη δεύτερη ευκαιρία και την προσωπική αλλαγή.

Ελεάννα Φινοκαλιώτη
Η Ελεάννα Φινοκαλιώτη είναι βραβευμένη Ελληνίδα ηθοποιός, ερμηνεύτρια, χορεύτρια και ακτιβίστρια, που ζει και εργάζεται στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σπούδασε Θέατρο στο Εδιμβούργο (Queen Margaret University – BA in Performing Arts with Distinction) και Μουσική και Πιάνο στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Αθηνών.
Στις αρχές της καριέρας της απέσπασε το Βραβείο Β΄Γυναικείου Ρόλου για την ερμηνεία της ως Ιουλιέτα στην παράσταση Romeo & Juliet, στο Πανευρωπαϊκό Φεστιβάλ Olive Festival 2010 στο Μιλάνο. Το 2025 τιμήθηκε με το Βραβείο 54ONY για Καλύτερο Σύνολο (Best Ensemble) για τη συμμετοχή της στην παραγωγή Let’s Be Bad: Celebrating Broadway Villains στο 54 Below, στο Manhattan. Τα τελευταία χρόνια δραστηριοποιείται κυρίως στη Νέα Υόρκη, με παρουσία σε θέατρο, κινηματογράφο, τηλεόραση και μουσική σκηνή.
Philip Vlahakis
Από παιδί ήταν γοητευμένος από τα οικογενειακά ταξίδια στην Ελλάδα, όπου γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε ο πατέρας του. Η ιδέα να τοποθετήσει μια ιστορία εκεί υπήρχε πάντα στο πίσω μέρος του μυαλού του. Όταν, λοιπόν, άρχισε να διαμορφώνει το σκηνικό για το «Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical», όλα άρχισαν να συνδέονται.
Η Ελλάδα, ως γενέτειρα των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων, αποτέλεσε μια φυσική επιλογή, άλλωστε ο δίσκος (πρόδρομος του frisbee) ήταν μέρος των αγώνων σχεδόν από την αρχή τους. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, στράφηκε στον τόπο καταγωγής του παππού του, την Κρήτη, πατρίδα των Μινωιτών, του πρώτου προηγμένου πολιτισμού της Ευρώπης. Τι καλύτερο μέρος για να εξερευνήσει κανείς την έννοια του «πολιτισμένου», που βρίσκεται στον πυρήνα του «Spirit of the Game»;

Crete and Knossos are coming to Broadway with Eleanna Finokalioti and Philip Vlahakis in the musical “Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical”, which opens this May in New York City.
The new Off-Broadway musical “Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical”, which will run from May 14 to May 17, 2026 at the well-known Asylum NYC theater, is set in the area of Knossos in Crete. The script and music are by the Cretan-descent Philip Vlahakis, while the role of Sophia is played by Cretan-born Eleanna Finokalioti from Merambello.
The President of the World Council of Cretans and Executive Vice President of the Pancretan Association of America, Mr. Nikos Kastrinakis, had the opportunity to attend rehearsals and stated the following: “It is very moving to see a high-quality Off-Broadway musical, in the cultural capital of the world, taking place in the area of Knossos. Eleanna Finokalioti, from Merambello, with her exceptional voice and outstanding acting abilities, evokes profound emotions in the audience. For me, this is a modern theatrical expression of the soul of Crete. At the Pancretan Association of America, we have every reason to be proud, as Eleanna is a worthy descendant of the late President of the Pancretan Association of America, Konstantinos Finokalos. In addition, as Philip Vlahakis confided to me, the writing of the text was completed in Archanes, Crete.”
The work, with text and music by Philip Vlahakis, follows Johnny Diskakis, a former athlete who returns to Crete with his father and tries to find his way again through a new and unexpected experience. At the center of the story is Sophia, played by Finokalioti, who has a pivotal role. Through her relationship with Yiorgos, Johnny’s father, she tries to lead him toward a different outlook on life and to confront him with himself. The role also includes a strong musical component, with two solo songs and a significant presence in key scenes. The direction and choreography are by Liz Piccoli, while musical direction is by Julian Blackmore. The production moves between humor and emotion, with its central themes being second chances and personal transformation.

Eleanna Finokalioti
Eleanna Finokalioti is an award-winning Greek actress, performer, dancer, and activist based in New York City. She studied Theatre in Edinburgh (Queen Margaret University – BA in Performing Arts with Distinction) and Music and Piano at the National Conservatory of Athens. At the beginning of her career, she received the Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet at the 2010 Olive Festival, a pan-European festival held in Milan. In 2025, she was honored with the 54ONY Award for Best Ensemble for her participation in the production Let’s Be Bad: Celebrating Broadway Villains at 54 Below in Manhattan. In recent years, she has been primarily active in New York, with work spanning theatre, film, television, and music performance.
Philip Vlahakis
As a child he was always enchanted with the family trips to Greece, where his father was born and raised. The idea of setting a story there was always in the back of his mind. And when he first envisioned the setting for Spirit of the Game: The Ultimate Musical, all the dots started to connect. Greece, as the birthplace of the olympic games, was a natural choice – the discus (the precursor to the frisbee) of course having been in the games almost since its beginning. More specifically, he turned to his grandfather’s birthplace, Crete, home to the Minoans, the first advanced civilization in Europe — what better place to explore the notion of what it means to be civil, something at the heart of the “Spirit of the Game.”
